    Hi all,

We received a donation from a donor on his business check. The business is his home business, and he wrote his name above the company name.

Does the donation have to go on the home business name and the individual be soft credited? Normal practice, we put the hard credit on the record the check was cut from but since this is his home business I wanted to ask.

    Thanks,

    Tammy

I record business donations as gifts from the business and are receipted as such. I know that I have to keep my business and personal donations separate for tax filing purposes.

Writing the name on the check doesn't change which entity owned the money, so you should continue to follow your normal policy. As it happens, it's not likely to affect the tax deductibility for the donor -- assuming that home business is an LLC or other kind of disregarded entity, the tax deduction will fall to the donor's tax return anyway.
