    Hi all,

When you enter a stock donation are you valuing it based on the average of the high and low? If so, do you adjust for any gains or losses on the donor's record?

We have a couple donors who had a large gain and one with a significant loss. The question is, for the donors with a gain should that be added to their lifetime giving amounts and for the loss do you go back to the donor to let them know?

    Thank you!

    Tammy

Any gains or losses are just that. The gift is valued once using your best estimate as to its value on the date of gift.

Advancement systems do NOT make adjustments after that.

Thanks, John!  I knew that would be the answer .  Just to put it out there because I know they will ask, if you have a donor who had a gain of $25K+ would you ever consider giving them only recognition credit for the gain?

    No.

Although if your donor recognition and soft credit policy allows for exceptions approved by your CEO, you do what you are told

But this is a worm hole you do not want to enter. Would you reduce their credit if the stock lost value?

These are YOUR gains or losses and have nothing to do with the donor.
