  • 1.  Live Alumni and other vendors for data cleanup/enhancement

    Good morning,

    I'd love to hear from folks who have utilized Live Alumni. As a community college, we are a little apprehensive since many alumni often neglect including us on their LinkedIn profiles. What has your experience been with them and would you recommend them? What types of data do you receive back?

    Also looking for suggestions on great data cleanup companies, specifically places that can take a list of our existing phone numbers and verify if they are cell or landlines. We have been using Alumni Finder and are considering MelissaData as well.

    Hi Kelly- We use Live Alumni and have been for a few years now.  We do get a lot of updated info from them.  We haven't quite mastered the art of doing automated uploads into our system yet because it's a lot of text proofing to determine if we already have the same position in the system (Asst. vs Assistant, etc.) We've matched the majority of our alums with their LinkedIn profile and can do searches within their system for the latest info even if we don't have it updated in ours yet. But most of our alumni (and even some extra) list us in their profile.  I'm happy to connect you with my Director of Prospect Research if you want to know more!

    Hi Kelly,

    Our Prospect Management team uses LiveAlumni, mainly for deeper targeted research. We are on Blackbaud CRM and incredibly picky about the quality of our data, so we selectively loaded some of the data into the employment relationship area, mainly on alumni that didn't have any employment recorded on their record. We also added a custom table that displays in the same area as employment that shows the raw data from LiveAlumni, so it can be used as a reference for data entry users that are adding or updating employment.

     

    Speaking of quality of data, the info from LiveAlumni/LinkedIn is self-reported, so it was both horrifying and amusing to find that we loaded job titles like "God," "Data Guru," "Retired and loving it!," among others. Needless to say, we had a bit of cleanup after that first load, and we are even more cautious now!

    We have used Live Alumni for years and have had great updated data come back to us. It has also provided us with LinkedIn URLs, employment data, etc. 

    We normally do a big data cleanse of our database every three years now which we have normally gone through Brian Lacy & Associates to help with those which have been helpful to identify new deceased alumni and wealth ratings. https://www.brianlacy.com/

    Hi Kelly,

    I am also at a community college.  We've used Live Alumni for the past couple of years.  I really like the company--they are very responsive and provide great training resources.  We've been somewhat overwhelmed with keeping up/integrating their data updates into our CRM (Blackbaud Raiser's Edge).  I'd be happy to talk with you more directly on the community college challenge specifically.

    As for cell vs. landline, I just did a screening through PhoneValidator and it was very fast, cheap, and appears to be accurate.  https://www.phonevalidator.com/

    Afternoon Kelly,

     

    LiveAlumni is my go-to when it comes to employment data vendors.

    At this point – LinkedIn has long since replaced the business card for college graduates.

     

    Right now – we opted for receiving job title, employer, business email, and LinkedIn URL.

     

    In terms of telephones –

    I've leveraged two different vendors to answer that question. 
    Accurate Append is consistent when it comes to identifying landlines.  

    Number portability has made it more difficult to identify mobile numbers – but have used AlumniSync in the past for that work.

    We also use LiveAlumni.  We took the addition step of aligning our jobs/professions in NXT to those utilized by LinkedIn.  This has made the sync of data with NXT pretty straight forward.
