  • 1.  How to record a bequest for a donor that is only 50ish years old

Greetings!  We have a donor that signed a bequest intention recently for a rather significant amount, however he is only around 54 years old. How do others record or keep track of such a gift, especially going into a campaign?  I know we cannot count it at face value - but should we just add it to our system and apply a future action to book the value when he is 65 years old? We want to ensure they still get stewarded and kept engaged, and of course hope they don't change their mind!!  Thanks in advance :)

You can definitely document this in the prospect management system. But what I think works best is to record it as you would any other expectancy, but with a value of $0. Then, attach it to an opportunity that has all the details.

Further, the donor should be formally assigned to your PGO's portfolio and noted as being in the stewardship phase of the cultivation cycle. Effective annual (or more) outreach and stewardship may yield a current gift in the next couple of years, as well as the possibility of increasing the bequest amount.
