  • 1.  Gift Acceptance Policy questions

    Posted 07-25-2024 03:26 PM
    Hi all,

My organization is working on revising our gift acceptance policy, and I wanted to see if anyone would share their stance on the following questions.

-When goal setting, do you limit the amount/percentage for deferred gifts? If so, what percentage of the total is the limit for deferred gifts at your organization?

-Has anyone adjusted their policy based on the new CASE reporting update this year that removed the 5 year limit on multi-year pledges?

Any insights you can share would be greatly appreciated!

The percentages you are referring to mostly pertain to setting campaign goals. Therefore, I tend to suggest that they not be embedded in gift acceptance policies, but they do belong in campaign counting policies.

As a campaign consultant, I encourage my clients to go with a 70/25/5 plan:
    • 70 percent outright gifts and pledges
    • 25 percent irrevocable planned gifts
    • 5 percent revocable planned gifts
It is certainly permissible to go over in any of these categories. But going over in one category does not mean you can go under in another.

CASE has NOT removed the five-year pledge payment period. Please take a look at pages 58 and 67. The new standards continue to emphasize five years for pledge payment periods, with substantial due diligence for going longer.

However, that change was predicated on many institutions already allowing pledges for longer periods. Five years is still the "norm." However, many institutions allow longer, but only upon approval of the CAO and often the President.

    Good afternoon, Rebecca:

Completely agree with Mr. Taylor here. Gift Acceptance policies, IMHO, are intended to address both the immediate and ongoing (far beyond any campaign) parameters for both what is acceptable for the organization to receive and also address any subsequent disposal - if necessary - of contributions. These core policies should be positioned to address acceptance practices beyond targeted campaign structure.

Hopefully you'll get some other input here, but I also go back to simple Google searches to find tremendous examples of practices - gift acceptance policies and otherwise - as most organizations have become transparent about how they have defined such structures.

    With best regards,

    Amy
