  • 1.  Donation from a 529

    Hi all,

    We have a parent who wants to donate their child's 529 to us since there is no tuition to pay at the service academy. Can they do that?

    In a word, no.  But your donor should be talking to their CPA or tax attorney about this - not you.

    Here's a related article from 2020:


    In essence, the donor would have to take the money back from the 529, subject to taxes.  Earnings are taxed as income.  And then they would have to pay the 10% penalty.  Then they can donate their cash wherever they want.
