  • 1.  Discount for donors from local businesses

    Posted 30 days ago
I have a question from some coworkers who are brainstorming ways to get local alumni-owned businesses involved in our Day of Giving. If a local business offers a discount or free small item to a donor who presents their gift receipt, does that impact the charitable nature of the gift? My assumption is yes, and additionally the business would not be able to claim this as a gift in kind, but wanted to check with the group.

Yes. You are correct. This is a QPQ even when a third party provides the benefit. Compounding the problem is the need for the business to document who received what and then you would have to issue a revised receipt.

    Don't do it!
