Hi Elizabeth,
Many of our student groups on campus hold bake sales, flower sales, etc.. They have to get approval from our office and we have worked with our student activities office to have an online form that they have to fill out. We process all of the funds through our office. They are allocated to their student group as non-charitable revenue. We process through our database to an Anonymous Donor record and a non-charitable fund type. That way we can also report on monies that are coming into the university even though they aren't considered charitable.
Best,
Jen

Subject: Bake sale revenue - benchmarking
Hello all,
With the semester starting (soon!), I have been getting questions from our Registered Student Organizations (RSO) across campus regarding acceptable fundraising. I thought it would be good to hear what other institutions are doing.
Historically, RSOs have incentivized giving through providing a baked good in exchange for a donation. I see at least two ways of looking at this.
a) This is a gift with a QPQ component.
b) This is a purchase and proceeds go towards supporting an RSO. Just because the net is being used to support a group does not necessarily make it a gift.
In our Advancement division, we are working on other ways to support and build a culture of philanthropy in our student population, recognizing that bake sales may not do that. But as we shift that culture, and until all RSOs have gift accounts where they could put all proceeds, if we wanted to count them as gifts, I'm wondering if Option b is acceptable.
Thanks for your help and experience in all things creative fundraising...
Elizabeth
