We received an estate gift of EE Savings Bonds.  Since the EE bonds had a target value when fully mature, can we use the amount of the actual proceeds as our valuation?  Or do we need to look into an outside valuation like with stocks, for example?

(I would normally search the archive to see if this topic had been previously discussed, but the page keeps erroring out; not sure if others are having this issue or something's wrong on my end?)

    Thanks!

The only time EE bonds can be donated is through an estate.  If the donor is living, they cannot transfer the bonds.  They have to sell them, pay due taxes, and give you cash.

But when it comes to an estate, you get to cash them in and not pay taxes.  You, therefore, count the total realized proceeds.  But please note that you must report the amount of the accrued interest to the executor so they can include that in their estate reconciliation.
