We have a new-to-us situation, where a donor has offered us some series EE savings bonds.
"I have over a hundred $200 series EE bonds, most of them expired, a few come due this year, and a few through the next couple of years. They are quite a pain to redeem – wondering if UMW would be interested?"
After researching (here and online), we understand that he cannot transfer these bonds to us. The option to appoint an agent (or an attorney-in-fact) to save the donor the work of redeeming the individual bonds does not seem to be an option as the donor assigns the bonds to the agent (us) who then receives the funds. https://www.treasurydirect.gov/forms/sav1522.pdf
If he declines to cash the bonds in and make an outright gift, we will offer the option of making a gift via a bequest. How do we determine the value of this bequest as the bonds are currently at different dates of maturity?
Thank you!
