  • 1.  Unidentified electronic transfer from Fidelity (not DAF) - is there any way to identify donor or confirm it was anonymous?

    Posted 12-02-2022 04:52 PM
Hello, we received an unknown ACH from what appears to be a Fidelity IRA. After discussing internally, we do not know of any donor who would have made this gift.

Is there any specific way to contact Fidelity to determine if the donor was willing to disclose identity or determine if it was an anonymous donor? I talked to a few people at Fidelity, and both people didn't seem to fully understand what I was asking for, so I am not sure if they gave me the correct answer (they said it could not be disclosed). While that may be the correct answer, I just wanted to check here to see if anyone has navigated this before.

Adam, you could always ask your bank to return the ACH electronically, adding a note: Unknown Deposit - Please call NNN-NNN-NNNN.

I am currently dealing with this. What a headache. I will let you know what I learn regarding these fidelity wires.

I've had to deal with this multiple times and every time I contact Fidelity, they tell me the same thing: if the donor wanted their name associated with the donation, it would be included.  Inevitably, at least one of those donors eventually calls asking why they never received their receipt or acknowledgement, insisting that they said to include their name.  We always ask our gift officers if anyone was expecting it, but if the donor hasn't reached out to let their GO know something is on the way, there's not much we can do.  Fidelity has consistently told me they can't disclose any information without the donor on the line with them.

    Good luck!

This has been my experience as well (Fidelity not disclosing anything). I did once get a more helpful representative who was willing to contact the donor and confirm if they wanted their name shared or not. When the donor told them to yes share it, I got a call back with the donor name. That was nice, but I got the feeling it was above and beyond what is typically expected. You could always try asking Fidelity to confirm the donor's choice regarding their name and explain the past issues you have encountered. It's no guarantee but maybe you'll get a helpful rep!
