    I was curious to know if anyone finds it beneficial to track and record social media handles and personal websites for donors/alumni. 

    We keep track of LinkedIn links of our constituents but I wasn't sure if keeping Facebook Profiles, Instagram etc. is something we wanted to do. My only concern is links break or profiles become deactivated and if we keep track of those in our CRM it would be a hard time cleaning up unwanted links that are no longer useful. 

    Thoughts?

    Hi Gizel, You didn't mention which database you use. We use Raiser's Edge. Blackbaud added LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter to their dropdown list several years ago. We do actively collect LinkedIn URLs and use LiveAlumni to help with that. For other social media, we do not actively seek the info, but if it comes up while we are researching, we do add it.

    I wonder if anyone can speak to the utility of tracking these various handles. Do gift officers actively use them when prepping for a donor interaction? Is there any kind of more macro application - i.e. using some kind of scraping tool to compile things like education, work, or location that might be stored on a social profile?  And is there any danger of storing these accounts and referencing information presented therein when the donor may not realize that's happening?

    Hi Dawn, 

    Sorry, we are using Slate which unfortunately doesn't actively have a dropdown list option for social media. Although in the contact category we can upload LinkedIn URLs which I find beneficial and we do track. 

    If we did want to track social media links, we would have to build a custom field in Slate to house that information.
