  • 1.  Recognition of a Software License on our Website

    Posted 01-11-2023 04:17 AM
    Dear All,

Best wishes for a happy and prosperous new year!

One of our donors is contributing a software license to our university, I am aware that we can not count it as a charitable gift, since it is considered by IRS as partial interest and we will not have full ownership of the copyright and reproduction rights. The donor wants us to recognize the $ amount of their gift on our website. Is there anything against this?

    Thank you

I worry about the president. Recognizing donors is one thing. Mentioning specific dollar amounts is another. Announcements and press releases of multi-million-dollar gifts is common. But it is less common to reference specific donors with specific amounts on the website. They are often recognized as part of a giving society that mentions groups of donors and ranges of gifts.

And this gift isn't even a countable gift.

And once you make this "exception," be prepared to hear from other donors who want similar treatment.

But, no, there isn't anything "against" this. But if you do it, I'd make it very clear in the announcement that the donation was for the "use of" the license for a while.
