We're a bit stumped on this one ... received notice from the State of New Jersey that the college is beneficiary of life insurance policy, and subsequently received same notice from the life insurance company itself. We were directed to a third party to process this, and were told that we need to know the decedent's mother's maiden name ... how on earth can we get that? To make matters worse, he may have immigrated and changed his last name. Even the Office of Vital Statistics and Registry states that we need mother's maiden name to get certified death certificate (and points us back to their third party partner agency). Any ideas? Especially from the good folks in New Jersey who potentially have to deal with this more frequently?

I gather your RE has no contact info or relatives noted.  If they were a graduate, perhaps Admissions has access to the original application.

My first stop would be my wealth screening vendor.  If you have a good relationship with them and want to keep your business, they might do some deep research on one person for you.
