  • 1.  Need for a death certificate?

When a donor with a documented planned gift passes, a step in our process has been to request a copy of the death certificate from the family.  We're now questioning whether this is something that we even need/should have on file.

Other than for folks who will be inurned in our Memorial Garden, is there any reason we would need a copy of the death certificate for a donor?

No. Unless you are actually managing the investment of a legally binding deferred gift. The bank or investment firms will need those copies to liquidate the assets and close down IRAs and such. But you don't need a copy.
