It depends. Ideally you would get the donor to specify minimum total amount. Would could book a pledge for that value. If they are not willing to commit to a minimum amount or number of years, you need to ask the CFO what they are comfortable booking.
Remember, bonafide pledges are booked as assets on the GL. Whenever there is a question on booking values, the CFO wins.
If the CFO won't book anything, and counting something in the fundraising totals matters, you may want to let the Gift Acceptance Committee decide.

We have a donor who would like to commit to making a large gift annually for the rest of their life. Should the gift agreement be written as a pledge in five year increments or would you just document their intention to give x amount annually and not document as a pledge?
