Incorrect Information on Credit Card Transactions

  • 1.  Incorrect Information on Credit Card Transactions

    Posted 12 days ago

    Good morning!

We have had an issue cropping up recently with some credit card gifts.  We started to get an increased number of disputes, and in looking into it, discovered that in some cases, donors were seeing, not the name of our university on the transaction, but the name of a completely unaffiliated business in another part of the city.  Our payment processor provided the following explanation:

"When a transaction is still pending on a cardholder statement, an issuer will often use analytics to provide the information to show on their portals. Once that transaction settles, they will use the information that was sent through with the transaction. Because of this process, it's a very issuer based decision and we don't have any control over what is displayed. The only recommendation that we can give is to have the cardholder talk to their issuer and let them know that the information was incorrect so they can potentially adjust their systems accordingly."

Has anyone else experienced this?  If so, did you find a way to resolve the issue beyond telling the cardholder to talk to their issuer?

Thanks very much for any insight you can provide!

Luckily we haven't seen that issue (yet). That seems like a very random, unhelpfully misleading and inexact approach to credit card processing. Shockingly so, actually.  I'm curious what others have to say.  Good luck!

My immediate reaction, Gwen, was that they should change payment processors! So I am with you!

Marcy, are you willing to share the name of your vendor? Others with the same vendor might have better advice.

    Marcy,

I have not seen that yet on an actual credit card processor, but have seen it on budgeting apps like Mint, etc. The budgeting app tries to be "smart" and translate the company name to what it thinks might be easier for its customer and often ends up with a completely different company name. Thankfully I know how to look at the source information in my budgeting app (not to mention log into my credit card account) to see what the real company name is.

    Thanks,
    Amber

It sounds likely that this may be the culprit in a situation like this.  If people aren't aware that these budgeting tools and apps are mistranslating the company name, and not going back to the original billing statements, it could cause a lot of confusion.  I could definitely see a donor looking at these tools and taking action without looking at the actual credit card statement and taking action.  One would hope a card processor as large as WorldPay would have protections in place to avoid something like this.
