    Happy New Year!

If you receive a gift for scholarships from a 501C3 organization and the gift states the name of the student to designate the scholarship to, do you process the gift and apply the scholarship or send the check to financial aid to process?

    Thank you,

    Melissa

It must be sent to Financial Aid for handling. These cannot be treated as gifts even if the donor is a nonprofit. The donor has retained control of the funds and earmarked them. These payments can be treated as income to the individual.
