  • 1.  Starting a 501c3 in California

    Hi all,

    I have some friends who want to start a 501c3 in California.  I am hoping my AASP community can guide me!  Do you have any suggestions for resources? Websites, books, etc.
    I found tons of resources online, but am hoping that this community can suggest websites, books, etc that you have dealt with directly just to weed out some of the clutter.

    They will need legal guidance from someone within the State. The AG Office might be useful. However, this website is a great starting place:

    The easiest, if most expensive, way to do this is to hire a lawyer. We've had good experiences with Perlman & Perlman. You could also use a service like Harbor Compliance, which is more affordable. Note that fees paid for establishing a nonprofit are typically characterized as loans from the founders to the org that are forgiven when the org becomes recognized, and can usually qualify for a tax deduction at that point. We do not recommend using a service like LegalZoom -- there are enough gotchas in this process that it is well worth getting some expert guidance.
