  • 1.  Gift on behalf of deceased donor

    Posted 09-28-2022 12:28 PM
    Hi there,

Before I communicate with this donor I'd like some wisdom as to the crediting of the gift. There was a mailer we sent in Mar 2022, which was received by the son of a donor who (unbeknownst to us) passed in 2021. I just received the response device from the Mar 2022 mailing, filled out by the son in the name of his father. A check accompanies the response device, from the son's account. Clearly the intent was to give a gift in the father's name, but as the father's name is not on the actual check, am I legally obligated to record the hard credit to the son (assumption here is we could honor the father by a soft credit and a note of "in memory" etc.). Let me know your thoughts!

    You are right.

But there's no harm in making the gift in honor or memory of the deceased.

Thanks John -- to clarify, you're saying, "yes" to hard credit to the son who wrote the check, but then notate "in memory of father"? Thanks.
