We have been asked to track Family Office information for high wealth families. In all of our prospect researching efforts, we are not aware of a way to discover families who have these. As a matter of fact, in my 12 years in higher ed fundraising, I have only ever been aware of a handfull of families with them and that was discovered by word of mouth with the donor. Can anyone lend insight if there is a way to find out this information?

Family (private) foundations I get. But I do not even know a legal definition for "family offices." Have you been given further guidance on this?

Hi John, we literally had to google the definition, as we were not given any guidance. We already track family foundations through organization relationships, and for consistency, would track this the same way. I was just wondering if anyone else knew of a source other than word of mouth to gain knowledge that a donor has a family office.

I am unclear about the value of tracking that information.

If the "high wealth" individual preferred you send correspondence to an alternate address, that is accommodated by adding that address and an "Attention to" contact on that donor's record.

You could also document the existence of that office in your prospect management system. There you could explain how and when to use one address over another.

I am not certain you need to create an additional record. I'd simply add the "alternate" address when it becomes known to you.

I believe the desire to track it is because it is just another indicator of high wealth. We have both ResearchPoint and DonorSearch, neither of which flag such affiliations. Sounds like it is just not possible to find anywhere other than learning it directly from the family.

A quick AI inquiry suggests that there "are around 8,000 family offices globally."

I would not dedicate a lot of resources to learning how many of those are affiliated with HPU.

It's been my experience, too, that there really isn't a way to know that a family has a family office besides word of mouth or receiving correspondence or even a check that literally says "Wraithmore Family Office" or whatever.  As far as a definition goes, I found this:
