  • 1.  donor wants to fund scholarships for 4-Hers

    Posted 2 days ago

    Hi!

We have a donor who is interested in setting up a scholarship fund for high school seniors participating in the UNH 4-H program who wish to go on to some form of post-secondary education. She would like UNH to send the scholarship directly to the higher ed institution to which the student recipient wishes to attend, even if it is not UNH. Our 4-H program is unlike any other at the university, since it is specifically for non-college students. While we appreciate the thought behind this request, we are unsure if it's okay for the UNH Foundation to give scholarship money to another higher ed institution. I would appreciate your thoughts.

    Thank you,

    Laura

The answer depends on the charter/mission of the foundation and your fiscal policies. One non-profit can give to another. You see this all the time with community foundations and the like. The only issue is whether this is a permissible use of UNH Foundation funds.

You will want to seek advice from Counsel and your CFO.

    Laura,

Call me tomorrow. NC State has a 4-H program and the program serves the whole state of NC. Due to the agreement we have we can create 4 H scholarships for other universities.

Thank you very much, John! This is, as always, very helpful.

Thanks also to Sarah Thomas, whom I spoke with this morning about NC State's experience.

    Best,
