  • 1.  Donor wants committee seat

    Hello everyone,

We have a donor (a foundation) that wishes to establish an endowed chair.  They would like to appoint a representative to the search committee for this chairholder.  They wouldn't be choosing exactly, but want to have input.

It seems as though this is similar to allowing the donor to choose a scholarship recipient, which is then not considered philanthropic since it's a gift then being made to a specific individual (if I understand the IRS logic correctly.)

Or is this different because it's an academic appointment?  I thought the donors needed to be outside of the selection process for both of these.  Also, can you point me to the actual document where this may be spelled out?

    Thank you!

It is not any different, Aimee. Your thinking is correct that this requirement gives the donor too much leverage.

Please take a look at the CASE Standards and the discussion about donor influence and control.
