  • 1.  check from org to send someone to conference

    A staff member submitted a request to an org for funding to use to send someone to a conference (the org is not providing the conference). This is a professional development conference related to higher ed.  We have received the check.  Would this be a gift?

    I have gone back and forth with this one.

    I thought I had responded to this earlier.  I apologize if this is a repeat!

    Ideally, the organization was solicited for a general gift to your University professional development budget.  Things get tricky if you request funds to sponsor a specific individual.

    Assuming, then, that the gift was for your general use and you were able to select the recipient - and assuming the conference is one that would enhance the participant's role at the University - I see no issues with treating this as a gift.
