I, like many of you I'm sure, have the fiscal year end frazzles. I know that we cannot accept money on behalf of our fraternities and sororities, affiliated with the university or not (CASE page 8) but what I cannot find an answer to is if we can accept a donation FROM one of the organizations. A fraternity did a fundraiser for one of the programs on campus and sent in a check but I'm not sure if we are able to process as a donation, or if we need to process through our finance department only.

Thank you and I wish you all the best with closing out FY23

Unless the organization is a separate 501 they are likely a student organization of the University. They cannot then make a gift as they are part of you!

They should have conducted the fundraiser through you so donors would have been received at the time. Now this should probably be treated like a proceeds-to-benefit event with no gift counting.

    Hi Amanda....

Is the check from the national fraternity?  Meaning the parent organization of all the chapters?  If so, that would probably qualify as a separate entity and make the donation a gift.  You may want to check into the possibility of receiving a check from the parent organization.
