    Hello,

    I have a donor that wants to move some of his gifts, including matching gifts, from an existing endowed fund to a new endowed fund. I am seeking help to learn if can we move the matching gift designation after the gift was made based on donor request alone? Or do we need to reach out to the corporation that made the matching gift to get approval to change the designation?

    Always follow donor intent. The original donor doesn't get to say where the matching funds go - only the matching donor can specify that.

    Most matching programs permit you to use their match in most institutional programs. A few have restrictions so you should first review their guidelines.

    However, these funds belong to the company and not the employee. Assuming you issued a receipt to the company reflecting the original disposition, in accordance with the Donor Bill of Rights you owe it to the company to notify them of the change.

    I do not think you need to ask for permission to make the change. But the notification should provide a clear avenue to contact you with questions or concerns.
