  • 1.  Bequest Evaluation

    Hello AASP friends,

I'm curious to learn how other institutions handle bequest valuations, especially when a value isn't provided by the donor.

Our team currently books these at a default value of $1, though I've suggested exploring a valuation model that takes the donor's age (or other relevant factors) into account to better reflect the potential future value.

I'd love to hear how others approach this.  Do you use a formula, a standard percentage, or simply assign a nominal amount?

Thanks in advance for sharing your insights!

Michele if you're talking about when a donor states that they're leaving a percentage of their estate in your name in their will, I ask my Prospect research team to conduct an evaluation to estimate the donors net worth at that time. I use that amount and apply the percentage to it as a placeholder.

These are revocable anyway and should be treated differently for counting purposes.
