  • 1.  Benevity and running donations through a foundation

I tried to find this in the archives and was not really having any luck finding anything. So I will ask the group and apologize if the answer is in the archives.

Do we need to be careful with benefits that might be given to donors with matching gifts from those third party matching companies that use a foundation to run the match through. For instance, would a $1,000.00 donor wall plaque be considered as an ineligible benefit if a donor gave $500.00 and expected the match to make up the other $500.00?

I know my thinking is probably off here. Please forgive me as it has been a long week. Which is also why I am asking for help on this one. TGIF!

Harvey, it's only the tangible benefits you need to worry about - such as invitations to gala events or physical thank-you gifts that exceed $12.50.

An honoring plaque or name on a bench or honor roll isn't a problem. However, for more significant recognition items - like naming a classroom - you probably should be in touch with the foundation or DAF, asking permission to use the individuals' names. After all, the qualifying gift was not made by the individual but by the foundation or DAF.
