I have searched the archives and understand that for benefits such as meals, events, and the like fall into the area of subtracting the FMV from whatever the donor receives.

My question deals more with the plaques, trophies, whatever else you would like to call them (in our case they are awards). Do their fair market value have to be deducted from the donor's lifetime giving total as well?

It has always been my understanding the items that serve strictly as a recognition conveyance (plaques, ribbons, banners, trophies) are excluded.

However, if the recognition piece is attached to something with a substantial retail value (an inscription on a Rolex or a brass plate attached to a captain's chair), the FMV of that item must be considered.

I do not have a legal reference for this recollection. It comes from discussions with Counsel at Duke decades ago. You will want to seek advice from Counsel as well.

Thank you John. Though I would state that the highest price we have on the "trophy" type award is $324.00. Which also relates to our lowest lifetime giving level. If that makes any difference.

That is an expensive trophy! But I cannot elaborate further. I suspect, though, if it has no resale value (the name is inscribed into the trophy), the earlier statement applies.
