  • 1.  Appreciated Stock

    Posted 22 days ago

    Hi everyone,

We have a donor who wants to give appreciated stock which I am not familiar with. Is this something that is treated differently than regular stocks? Are there specific questions we would need to get answered from the donor?

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thank you,

    Tammy

I think this is just a language issue. Most stock donations are of appreciated stock. Process this exactly as you normally would. They will DTC the shares to your account, and you will issue a receipt for the number of shares and the name of the stock without referencing a value.

Sorry, I misunderstood. The donor wants to give us appreciated EQUITY.  What is this?

Appreciated stock, in this context, simply means that the donor purchased the stock when it was worth a lot less, and by donating it, they will avoid capital gains tax on the amount it appreciated, while also receiving a tax deduction for the value of the contribution. On your end, this is a plain old stock gift.
