  • 1.  Adopt a family donation receipt?

    Posted 02-28-2025 07:16 AM

    Hello,

Our school adopted a few local families to provide needed items (think bedding, clothing, small kitchen appliances, etc.) and Christmas gifts. One of the donors is asking for a receipt for the items they contributed to the adopt-a-family program.  Is this something we would generate?  Would we treat it like an in-kind donation?  We have never been asked to do so before.

Thank you for any insight provided.

    Best,

While a worthy cause, it's unlikely they are eligible for a receipt.

It is not clear that the donation is for the benefit of your school. Moreover, the limited number of beneficiaries does not meet the IRS requirements for the size of the charitable class. Here's the RS lingo:

"charitable class is a group of individuals that may properly receive assistance from a charitable organization. A charitable class must be either large enough that the potential beneficiaries cannot be individually identified, or sufficiently indefinite that the community as a whole, rather than a pre-selected group of people, benefits when a charity provides assistance. For example, a charitable class could consist of all individuals located in a city, county, or state. This charitable class is large and benefits to it benefit the entire geographic community."
