Hello!

Our finance office is asking us to answer this question from the audit firm:

2. Has the University considered registering in other states since there are contributions coming from other states?

The question on the actual 990 is: List all states in which the organization is registered or licensed to solicit contributions or has been notified it is exempt from registration or licensing.

My colleagues and I in Advancement have no prior experience with having to answer this question or take any action around registering to receive outside donations from PA. Is there some sort of explanation or blanket answer I can provide the Finance Office to satisfy the auditing team? Or is there specific action we need to take here?

I would recommend hiring a company to manage your registrations. We use Clearly Compliant out of Cedar Rapids, IA and love them. They will do all the filing for you, which is a lot! Each state has its own requirements, so it can be a very daunting task. If you are interested in getting a quote from them I can give you our contact.
