Venmo

    Hello Friends!

There have been some recent discussions about Venmo. Does anyone have implementations stories to share? Their guidance seems to indicate that only a report with emails would be provided. About a month ago, I emailed Venmo support asking about donor postal addresses due to federal gift reporting needs, and have not heard back. Some folks shared that they only target domestic alumni via text campaigns for Venmo to overcome this issue. That's interesting. But I don't think that would fly here with much of our activity grateful patient fundraising. Appreciate your shared experiences. Thanks!

    Hello all,

I don't see that anyone replied to Aaron publicly, but has anyone out there successfully implemented Venmo for charities? Did you have to link a personal account to your organization's account? What information do you get from Venmo for a donation? How do you know where the donated money is to be allocated?

Sorry for the barrage of questions...senior leadership has seen the TechCrunch article now and wants us to implement by March!

    Good morning!

We process Venmo through our GiveCampus giving forms. We get a good bit of information from GiveCampus for any donation. On their reports Venmo is listed as the Card Type.

Good morning!  The last discussion in the fall I saw was the issue of Venmo for a charity needing to be attached to a personal Venmo account.  That poses it's own issues.  Has there been a resolution to that?  I think for us and others that is the first stumbling block as we don't want to attach our university account to a personal account and then that person leaves.

Venmo does now allow for a charity to set up an account (as of 9/30) . . . still needs a phone number and we are using a special university phone number to connect.  Not ideal but at least Venmo is now recognizing charities as a viable entity to receive $$

Some platforms (e.g. givecampus) allow the venmo link from giving forms which is nice but I believe there's an extra fee with that

Our goal (which is now doable) is to have donors give right from venmo.  Still working out how to know who and where . . . the who is easier as you do get information (e.g. email and name) but the where we're looking to get via comments and default our unrestricted fund if nothing is shared.

    We are testing

    Hi Thomas (and others!)

Can I ask whether you've had success with gifts directly to your institution right from Venmo?  The set-up worked on an institutional account, and charitable gifts have been received and recorded?

Looking forward to hearing any wisdom from your experience!

We are still working through internal process reviews about it . . . we're targeting March to go live.

    Thanks

Thomas - would love to hear an update. Specifically, did you end up getting an institutional mobile phone line to resolve this?

We are a Blackbaud shop and use BBMS for merchant services. We implemented accepting PayPal (with a connection to BBMS) almost a year ago. Shortly thereafter, Blackbaud also enabled Venmo acceptance (using PayPal as the conduit).

We added this as a convenience for our donors (to fish where the fish are) and PayPal and Venmo now account for 10% of all our online transactions and 3% of online dollars. The other digital wallets (Apple Pay, Visa Checkout) account for another 7% of both online transactions and dollars.

The implementation of these giving mechanisms and the data that you receive will likely be highly dependent upon your platform vendor(s). Because Blackbaud has integrated PayPal/Venmo and digital wallets with their Merchant Services, we are able to tell who the donors are because the transactions show up in the BBMS transaction list just like any other online credit card payment would.

Similar to Matt, we use GiveCampus to accept PayPal and Venmo gifts and are able to see the donor information because it comes through the GC giving platform.

    Hi Matt,

I'm surprised and delighted to hear that the Venmo/PayPal integration goes through BBMS. I thought the money would sit in the PayPal business account and then we'd have to deal with a separate disbursement. I think my Business Office will be ecstatic to hear that as well. We are shooting for a March launch.

Thanks for the clarification on how it works with RE and BBMS.

    Hi Lara,

To clarify, yes, the money is in PayPal and has a separate disbursement, but the transaction information shows in BBMS.

My apologies. After checking with my team, it seems I misspoke. PayPal/Venmo transactions do not show in BBMS. They do show up in RENXT - we can identify them with a Gift Payment Type of PayPal or Venmo. Our accounting office does review our PayPal business account and disbursement schedule regularly.

    Hi Matt,

Thanks for the clarification. I'm assuming the online transaction still appears in the Raiser's Edge plug-in? We don't use RE NXT for gift processing. I'm putting this out there for everyone to chime in.

    Thanks folks,

As long as it is the result of an NXT Online Donation form, it will automatically show up in batch for gift processing.
