There was an older comment on CASE communities about much fundraising for student orgs not being charitable.  What do we have to be aware of regarding tax deductible issues for gifts raised for student organizations?  Does the type of club matter because of the use of funds - ie do we have to look at different types of clubs differently such as clubs for sports;  cultural clubs such as Chinese Students org;  professional orgs such as Society of Women Engineers, Entrepreneurs Club; academic clubs such as biomedical engineering society;  religious clubs like Hillel;  just for fun clubs such as anime club. What about clubs such as THON, that raises funds for another charitable org?

Attached is a copy of the old IRS statements regarding student organizations. The summary answer is that money can be raised for student organizations as long as they exist solely for educational purposes.

BTW, the IRS began updating the entire Exempt Organizations manual many years ago have replaced that with different "Technique Guides" and "Technical Guides." I've been unable to locate an exact replacement for this original text. However, the attached two documents address "educational activities," social clubs, and fraternal organizations.

The Exempt Organizations Technical Guide, Publication 5781 (3-2023) (irs.gov), provides more language regarding charitable purposes which excludes social organizations.
