  • 1.  Stripe and WePay

    Posted 11-16-2023 08:41 AM

We were notified that WePay is not called Stripe.  The other day we were told by our finance office that we received money in the account under Stripe.  However, when we go to Stripe there is no money showing.  We emailed the company (that's the only way to contact them) and they said they don't see anything but they would need our account number our routing number and other information.  We of course did not give them this as when we set up things this was all completed.  Has anyone else had issues with this?

Ann, I'm not certain, but I think you might have a phishing scam on your hands. Did you mean to say that you were notified that "WePay is now called Stripe" ? If so, then I'm almost certain it's a scam. The companies WePay and Stripe did not merge, and it's likely that the emails you and your finance dept received were fraudulent. The scam is that they tell you that you have money in your Stripe account. When you look and see no money, you contact them, and they ask you for your Stripe info, which they use to compromise the account. I would advise you to contact your IT security folks for assistance.

    Hello,

PayPal and Stripe can have what is known as "managed accounts", meaning that you didn't set up the account per se, but the vendor set it up in your name.

GiveCampus creates managed PayPal accounts on users' behalf (with your permission of course!) but you do not manage or own the account.

The money is deposited into your org's bank account under the name of "PayPal" when it is money processed via PayPal or Venmo on a GiveCampus donation form.  All other CC transactions are deposited under the GiveCampus name on the bank statement.

There is a slight possibility that this is the case with WePay, so it's worth it to reach out to them directly.

    Good luck!

    Edited to add:

I just got a reminder that JP Morgan/WePay is ending service with Fidelity Giving Marketplace for us on December 27th of this year. Fidelity Giving Marketplace is using Stripe Express for payments.

Check your Fidelity Giving Marketplace and see if that transaction is there from the Stripe deposit.

This should go without saying, but in addition to what's already been stated, always reach out to your vendors directly using known-good contact information rather than information that would have been provided in an email.
