    Hello,


    We have a unit exploring sponsorships for a program, that wants to include the following "benefits" in the sponsorship. Each of these benefits seem to be advertising to me that need to be valued and noted as such on any receipt provided, correct?

    • Premium table at Kickoff Event with meet-and-greet opportunity

    • Opportunity to include branded giveaways at the event (provided by sponsor)

    • Opportunity to host an activity booth at the event to engage attendees
    • Option to provide branded giveaways or educational handouts related to STEM fields

    The giveaways are not an issue. But the opportunity to market and promote (the tables and activity booths) clearly cross the IRS advertising line - making the entire payment a payment for advertising.

    Thanks John,

    To clarify, when you say "making the entire payment a payment for advertising," are you referring to the value of a booth space as advertising or the entire sponsorship if it includes an amount above the value of the booth? (i.e., a partially deductible transaction)

    Also, if there was no booth space, but sponsors were offered the opportunity to giveaway items with their logo on it to event attendees, is that not considered advertising then since it is just logo recognition?

    The full sponsorship payment becomes a payment for advertising and nullifies any gift amount if the sponsor has an opportunity to communicate quantitative or qualitative information.
