    We have an alum who has a client that gives us donations because of the alum.  I am being asked to soft credit the alum for the clients gifts.  Is this something that should be done?

    You can. There are no hard and fast soft credit rules. Although institutions should develop SOPs for these.

    When in doubt I ask myself, would we have not gotten the gift were it not for the actions of the third party? If we would not have gotten the gift otherwise, the person who made the gift happen likely deserves soft credit.
