SMART goals must focus on improving current processes and performance. So, I won't be able to offer specific goals for you. Only you know what metrics you have been tracking and your performance trends. However, here are five broad goals and their associated SMART targets:
    1. Reduce Data Entry Errors

      • Specific: Decrease the number of data entry errors in [you name the target area].
      • Measurable: Achieve a 98% accuracy rate in [target area] data entry.
      • Achievable: Implement a double-check system and provide additional staff training.
      • Relevant: Accurate data entry ensures donor trust and accurate reporting.
      • Time-bound: Attain this goal within six months.
    2. Improve Processing Time

      • Specific: Speed up the gift entry processing time from receipt to CRM entry.
      • Measurable: Reduce the average processing time by 30%.
      • Achievable: Streamline the workflow and introduce automation tools.
      • Relevant: Faster processing enhances donor satisfaction and timely acknowledgment.
      • Time-bound: Reach this target within three months.
    3. Enhance Donor Receipt Timeliness

      • Specific: Ensure all donors receive receipts promptly after their gift is entered.
      • Measurable: Send receipts within 48 hours of gift entry.
      • Achievable: Standardize the receipt process and automate letter generation.
      • Relevant: Timely receipts strengthen donor relationships.
      • Time-bound: Implement this practice within one month.
    4. Integrate Online Giving Platforms

      • Specific: Seamlessly integrate online giving platforms with the CRM system.
      • Measurable: Ensure 100% of online gifts are automatically recorded in the CRM.
      • Achievable: Work with IT to develop the necessary integrations and conduct thorough testing.
      • Relevant: Integration reduces manual entry and errors, ensuring accurate records.
      • Time-bound: Complete integration within four months.
    5. Increase Staff Training and Proficiency

      • Specific: Enhance the proficiency of staff involved in gift and data entry.
      • Measurable: Conduct quarterly training sessions and achieve at least 90% proficiency as measured by post-training assessments.
      • Achievable: Develop a comprehensive training program and utilize in-house and external resources.
      • Relevant: Well-trained staff ensure accurate and efficient gift entry processes.
      • Time-bound: Establish the training program within two months and conduct the first session within three months.

    Thank you both!

Your examples are perfect and very helpful as we have just implemented a new system and are struggling as we balance the stabilization of the database with our day to day operations.

Patty, you will want to establish "smarter" goals ;-). Especially in data entry. As I presented yesterday here at the Midwest Meeting of the Minds conference, accuracy in contact information should be benchmarked by category (mailing addresses, email addresses, phone numbers) and percentage of constituents with employment information.

Accuracy in gift entry is more difficult to quantify - but you should try! However, turnaround time is definitely a category worth measuring!
