  • 1.  Service for State Charitable Registrations

    Posted 10-28-2025 10:11 AM

    Good morning,

We have been working with Perlman & Perlman to manage our state charitable registrations for about 15 years now, and our most recent annual experience hasn't been up to par. Long story short, we feel like we've had to be more involved than we should be given the services we're contracted and paying for. That being the case, has anyone engaged with a different vendor that they'd recommend? I'm especially interested in anyone's experience switching from Perlman to another company.

    Thank you!

    Hi Josh,

At my prior institution, we used Affinity Fundraising Registration (https://www.fundraisingregistration.com/).

Others reviewed at the time included Perlman & Perlman as well as:

Thank you, Matt. Were y'all happy with Affinity?

We have only ever used Affinity at University of Richmond, so I don't have a great point of comparison, but we've been happy with Affinity.

Hi Josh, we're using URS Compliance for our registrations.  We signed on with them in May.  Only complaint would be that we were under quoted for services, which I had thought was the case anyway just based on my own calculations.  I don't have any experience working with other vendors but before going with URS; I spoke with Perlman, Cogency, Copilevitz, Foundation Group, and Labyrinth.

Michael has listed the primary players in the space. Harbor Compliance is another.

FWIW, before we chose Perlman+Perlman at NC State in 2010, we had narrowed our options to three vendors, including Copilevitz and Labyrinth. All three appeared viable. However, P+P showed experience in working with large, complex organizations. NC State is composed of about seven college-based foundations, the University itself, the Alumni Association, and the Athletic Foundation. As you probably know, every affiliated entity must register if it conducts fundraising activities. Only P+P (at that time) could handle such a large project.

As an aside, we ultimately decided to divide and conquer at NC State. While we contracted with P+P for all registrations, the central advancement service office was responsible for managing the relationship for the North Carolina State University Foundation, NC State University, and the NC State Alumni Association. The remaining affiliated 501(c)(3)s had to use P+P but engaged with them independently.

Mind you, this all happened fifteen years ago. I don't know what the current situation is (Jeff Baynham may be able to offer an update).

SMU's experience with Labryinth was poor, prompting a recent search for a new partner. The initial outreach was challenging, as many partners were unresponsive or cited waiting lists. However, our new collaboration with Clearly Compliant has been great.  They have been organized, responsive, and helpful. https://clearlycompliant.com/
