Seeking Fund Purpose Examples for Scholarships for Students Who Do Not Qualify for Need-Based Aid

  • 1.  Seeking Fund Purpose Examples for Scholarships for Students Who Do Not Qualify for Need-Based Aid

    Posted 30 days ago

    Good afternoon,

I have seen several universities establish scholarships for students who do not qualify for need-based aid due to their family income, yet lack sufficient resources to cover the cost of attendance without relying on student loans.

Can you please help me with the following:

    1. I am seeking sample fund purpose language or examples of similar scholarships that address this middle-income gap. Additionally, I would appreciate guidance on how best to structure and administer a scholarship of this nature using objective, administratively feasible criteria.

    2. Specifically, I am interested in recommendations on income thresholds, FAFSA-based metrics, loan use, and other measurable factors that could be used to identify eligible students. More broadly, how are scholarships like this typically administered?

    3. If your institution currently administers a scholarship of this type, I would also welcome any best practices, lessons learned, or considerations to avoid when developing and implementing such a fund.

Thank you in advance for your insights and assistance.

Sarah, I cannot help you with minimums or suggested thresholds. Those will depend heavily on what each college/university charges for tuition, room, and board. I hope some folks on FundSvcs can share what they do - while also mentioning those costs.

However, here's some boilerplate language that might be useful (but which obviously needs work!):

This scholarship may be awarded to students who do not meet the University's formal criteria for need-based financial aid, yet for whom the total cost of attendance presents a significant financial barrier. Consideration may be given to students whose family resources, while above established need-based thresholds, are insufficient to reasonably support enrollment without additional assistance.
