  • 1.  Require a Gift to Attend an Event

    Posted 08-09-2023 10:12 AM

    Good Morning,

For a private event can a gift be a requirement to attend. For example, we are going to have an event that only certain folks will be getting invited to and they want to make a $1,000 gift a requirement for attendance. The event will be cigars and bourbon with the coach and president.

Could they break this up to have a portion be a registration fee maybe $10 and the rest be the gift if it falls within the benefit rules.

    Thanks

    Liz

You will want to involve counsel. Establishing a minimum cost to attend creates a FMV equal to that amount. You will need to be creative - and legal.

Further, the QPQ value is going to be much higher than $10 for bourbon and cigars.

Further, donors will need to make personal gifts - no DAF or private foundation payments!

Thanks John. The $10 was only an example.
