  • 1.  Receipting Stock Gifts

Good afternoon.  This is a new thread on an old subject that has been covered numerous times.  I am getting ready to defend our stock receipting process in a meeting with management.  They feel highs and lows should be included in the receipt language for the donor's information.  We already include the gift date, type of stock, number of shares, and gift value.   As part of this process, we include the disclaimer blurb at the bottom per John Taylor's advice.  I'm just circling over to confirm there have been no changes in this Best Practices since the last update.

    Thanks

The aasp Best Practices document on this subject (last updated in 2022) has not changed since my earlier advice. Further, IRS Publication 1771 now states more directly that receipts for gifts of property should not include value information - at all.

My "blurb" does reflect valuation information with a disclaimer. However, I include values (and the disclaimer) only upon donor request - not as a default.

For those unfamiliar with the blurb in question, here's one version:

Thank you for your gift of X shares of Y stock, which we have valued for our internal purposes only at $Z as of MM/DD/YY. For tax purposes, you should seek guidance from a tax professional in determining your deductible amount.
