    Good Morning!

Can you let me know if it is your policy to send receipts to matching gift companies? Our receipting process excludes matching gifts and I'm not sure why!

    Thanks!

    Diane

    Good morning Diane,

We receipt matching gifts if the gift is coming directly from the company but we don't for gifts received through third party platform like Benevity and YourCause.

We do the same as what Karry mentioned. Every now and then we may get a matching gift directly from a small company that isn't using a third-party vendor but most of our matching gifts come through Benevity (online giving foundations), YourCause (Blackbaud Giving Fund), or FrontDoor/CyberGrants/Bonterra (Charities Aid Foundation).

    Hello Diane,

You would issue a receipt only if the gift came directly from the company itself. Most companies use platforms such as Benevity, CyberGrants, YourCause, etc., which function similarly to a DAF and therefore do not require receipting. However, donor acknowledgement and stewardship for their participation and impact is still something your donor relations team should consider.

    Take care,

    Michele

I am not sure why, either! Unless the funds are coming from an affiliated foundation (in which case they cannot claim a deduction in the same way an individual or corporation can), they likely need a receipt. But more importantly, it's simply good stewardship to let them know the funds were received!

To that last point, I encourage clients to send a receipt to any donor regardless of their filing status. It's just good donor relations. However, if the donor asks to omit receipts (like is true for the Fidelity Charitable Gift Fund), I'd always honor those wishes.

John, most of the matching gift administrators that Karry, CJ, and Michele named are just like Fidelity Charitable in that they specifically state they don't want the charity to receipt them (the matching gift company). Just as one example, Benevity says it here.

Diane, it'll usually say on the documentation you get with the payment or EFT notification whether or not they want a receipt, and if it doesn't, you can glance at their website, where they'll often have FAQs or pages specifically for the charity to reference.
