Questions re: Principal Gift Level Naming Opportunity funded by multiple donors

    Hello everyone,

I would like to know how other institutions manage gifts with an associated naming opportunity being funded by multiple donors. Do you allow principal level gifts (deanships, colleges, institutions, etc.) to be funded via pledge commitments from multiple donors? Do these solicitations undergo an approval process either in conjunction with standard donative naming protocols or as part of gift exceptions/acceptance committee? Do your institutional policies include any guidance specific to the management of these gifts?

Thanks in advance for any feedback or insight offered.

Most organizations I work with developing naming policies allow funding to come from numerous sources. There are no exceptions to the minimum funding level or the five-year pledge payment period. Bonafide pledges must be secured from each participant in the naming opportunity.

On this last point, you will want individual pledge agreements for each participant clearly stating the portion each will contribute.

There usually are extra approvals required when the naming pertains to a facility.

The key difference when the funding is from multiple individuals is determining the appropriate name. Most of my clients limit the naming to a set number of characters (always the case for facilities but also common for endowments). No exceptions are considered for multiple donors. So, the constituent group will need to develop a proposed name that is then approved by your naming committee - it likely will not include the name of everyone contributing!
