Question Regarding Matching Funds for D&I Endowment Gifts

  • 1.  Question Regarding Matching Funds for D&I Endowment Gifts

    Posted 4 days ago

    Hello all,

Due to the D&I Presidential Executive Orders issued in January 2025, we are currently reaching out to donors who previously gave to endowments restricted to D&I purposes to ask whether they would be willing to redesignate their gifts. While many have been open to redesignation, some donors have requested full refunds, which we certainly understand.

As we work through these requests, we are now encountering situations where donors also received corporate matching funds for their original D&I-directed gifts, and we are uncertain how best to handle those matching contributions.

As many of you may know, communicating with companies regarding matching gifts can often be challenging. In some cases, companies do not want the funds returned, it can be difficult to reach the appropriate contact, or the matching funds were processed through a third-party administrator.

Has anyone encountered a similar situation? If so, how have you handled the matching funds? Additionally, would it be appropriate for our Gift Acceptance Committee to determine where those matching funds should be redesignated if returning them is not feasible?

Any guidance or insight would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you,

    Tammy
