You are correct. The offer of a discount for products or services crosses the IRS advertising line - eliminating any deductibility.
The QR code is fine if all it does is take the individual to their main website. But any product inducement negates the gift.

Hello,
We have a sponsor who submitted their artwork for signage with a "Use code XXXX for $X Off your next order". I believe this makes it advertising (correct me if I'm wrong) and I mentioned that they would have to remove it. Someone suggested a solution would be to replace that language with a QR code that, when scanned, would then give the person the discount code. Is this still advertising even though the language isn't technically on the sign? I would think so, but wanted to get some other opinions as I haven't seen this topic come up before.
Thanks!
