  • 1.  Prize for highest raising fundraising team

We are planning a p2p fundraising competition among booster groups for a local sports team. The sports team would like to give 30 tickets to the booster group that raises the most money for us, and then the booster club would decide how to distribute the tickets themselves. Is this a quid pro quo issue? We're not sure because (1) the prize goes directly from the sports team to the booster club, without it touching my organization and (2) individuals donate through the booster fundraising page hosted by my org but the booster, not my organization, determines how potential "prizes" are allocated. Thanks in advance!

For starters, it never matters where the benefit comes from - only that you receive one.

However, in this case, the "winners" are not receiving anything because THEY gave, but because they raised the most money. I do not see a QPQ in that case.

    One cautionary note:

The booster clubs cannot say anything like, "All donors will be entered into a drawing for the tickets," or "The first 30 donors will receive a ticket if our club wins." The former would be a game of chance, and no donor - ticket-winner or not - could claim a deduction. In the latter case, there would be a QPQ. The IRS language regarding QPQ includes any benefit the donor ultimately receives as a result of their gift.
