Good morning,

We are working to clean up/enhance our suffixes in our database and I have a couple of questions regarding best practices.

1. Are you using periods or not in the suffixes? (ie. M.D. vs MD)
2. Do you add any suffix that a constituent has at the end of their name or do you have a policy regarding that?
3. Is there a list somewhere that has the proper format for suffixes and their definitions?  We have three different versions of licensed social worker and we also have some suffixes that we have no idea what they are.

I think it is a matter of preference regarding punctuation. We have opted not to use punctuation in professional suffix, but we use it in title (Ms., Dr., etc.) and also in the Jr. and Sr. suffixes. Here is a good resource - https://www.formsofaddress.info/post-nominal-abbreviations/. We used it as guidance, but we have not gotten too specific regarding the order of multiple credentials. We use whatever professional suffix and order the constituent requests, as we are seeking to address them as they prefer, and it is too cumbersome to manage strict standards on this.
