  • 1.  Possible Donor Influence

    Hello,

I have a donor who is funding a display to be built for his artwork and memorabilia in the library. The library picked the architect, but the donor is requesting to be involved in the design process.

I think this might be okay only if the Library has a final say on design.  The donor originally wanted to select the architect and we said no. Curious to what your thoughts are?

    Thank you!

    Hi Michele,

If the donor has finalized their contribution, and is now operating in a purely advisory capacity, with the library having final say, I think you're in the clear. Ideally, the entire amount of the contribution is already sitting in your bank account, too.

    Thank you,

The determination of donor influence and donor control are subjective.  CASE does a good job - in the new Global Standards - of explaining the issue.  And they also provide a few examples.

I suggest taking those few pages from the beginning of the book, and giving them to your Gift Acceptance Committee.  Ask them, then, to determine whether this donor demand meets the outlined criteria.  This is usually not a one-person decision.

As an aside, the relationship of the donor to the institution, their potential for future gifts, their past actions, and the extent to which they seek to change decisions already made are all factors the GAC must consider.
