  • 1.  Policy regarding planting trees and naming

Can someone share their policy on alumni wanting to plant a tree on the campus in honor of someone?  Is it a gift-in-kind, who pays for the plaque, and what happens if the tree needs to come down?

The College Naming Protocol should outline any policy regarding tree planting, bench installment, or other external naming opportunities. A separate policy can exist for these items but must still honor the overall naming policy.

While these are obviously not as substantial as buildings or classrooms, there must still be a similar review process to ensure the proposed form and location (and wording) meet College standards.

UNC has one such separate policy:

Clemson addresses this within their naming policy:

Stanford (like many others I have encountered) does not generally permit such namings. See paragraph 1.d.:

We (an independent K-12) do plaques and benches for a $5,000 gift. Of that, probably $1500 goes in to the actual planting of the tree / plaque / dedication, and the rest into a fund for future maintenance. The donors work with our building and grounds team to determine the appropriate location and they can select from a few different kinds of trees.

We have had multiple instances where a named tree has been damaged in a storm and cut down. We usually inform the donor and replace as soon as we can within reason (ie - we're not going to plant in November). We do have one memorial tree that blew down in a storm but we are not intending to replace because we are looking to do some improvements to the area. In that case, we informed the donor and moved the plaque to elsewhere on the campus.

I try to encourage benches over trees - it's a lot easier to maintain a bench over a tree and if the bench is damaged, it's a lot easier to move the plaque to a new bench. That said, our benches do tend to wander off - we've installed a system where they are lightly staked to the ground, which isn't enough to deter the most determined, but will get those parents who want to move it for one reason or another.

I'm pulling from memory, but at my previous institution our policy detailed the required gift amount for a tree or bench, which was to be given as a cash gift and not gift-in-kind since the donor was providing the college the funds to purchase said item, rather than donating a tree itself. The gift amount was determined based on the cost of the tree or bench plus the plaque, plus an additional amount to cover the long term maintenance or replacement. In fact, if I remember correctly, I believe we went so far as to specify that a portion of the gift would be put into an endowment for campus landscaping for this purpose.

The policy also stated that while the donor was welcome to recommend their preferred type of tree or location on campus, ultimate discretion was given to our grounds team to determine what was most compatible with the master campus landscaping plan and needs.

I like our policy. We got out of the tree, bench and bricks business.

7.6 Items such as furniture, trees, shrubs, plants, benches, bricks, bike racks or any item that is moveable and not permanent shall not be named. The Vice Chancellor for University Advancement or designee may grant exceptions on a case-by-case basis.

Similar to what others have described, we do not name benches, trees, etc. In our policy, anything external has to be approved by the Board of Trustees, so in essence we could grant exceptions and present something for BOT approval, but in practice we are not providing these as options.
